Mike Martin

Football Coach, Board of Directors – Vice President

“If we can build their self esteem, we have already built champions” – Coach Mike Martin

Mike was a police officer in Jersey City for over 20 years. While in the JCPD, he taught Physical Fitness and Firearms at police academies across New Jersey. He has also appeared on the Maury Povich talk show as a motivational speaker, a skill he makes use of on the field. Although he could be coaching football at prestigious high school and college programs, Mike believes in JCPAL and choses to stay; he has been coaching JCPAL football since 2003.

As a Jersey City native, Mike got tired of seeing children lost to the game and the violence. They didn’t have truly positive role models. That became more evident as he raised his youngest son on his own. He began to have a passion for giving back to the community; to make a difference for his own children, and for kids like him from the inner city.

In his years with JCPAL, Mike has coached several sports. In 2012, he was even awarded Coach of the Year. When he ran the track program in the 2013-14 season, he had the opportunity to take the kids to the Junior Olympics.  He often sees the kids he has coached go on to play sports in high school, get college athletic scholarships, and even go on to play professionally!

As a father, coach and  mentor, Mike is a local hero,  making a positive impact on the community every day.
