Tyshaun
Posted on : 08-26-2016 By : admin
Born and raised in Jersey City, Tyshaun started out with JCPAL when he was 7 or 8, but quit.  He didn’t have much of a focus, and his mother (Lashone) was looking for ways to keep him out of trouble. A chance meeting with coach Mike Martin changed Tyshaun’s path.  He encouraged him to join the JCPAL football team at age 10, and Tyshaun stuck with it for 4 years. Tyshaun became focused, diligent, and began to excel in school (making the Dean’s List).  These qualities got him into Hoboken High…

One of the hardest parts of Tim Dowd’s career as a Jersey City Police Officer was seeing Jersey City kids with no place to go and running into trouble with the law. So in 1976 he started an athletic program that encouraged local kids to come together in organized sports and events and away from the street corners. After an incredibly time consuming but wildly successful two years, Tim officially founded the Police Activity League of Jersey City Inc.   Since 1978, Jersey City youths from 5-19 years of age…

"JCPAL taught me all the aspects of law enforcement. It showed me the good side of policing, rather than what the media portrays. It made me want to become an officer even more. It helped me to stay out of trouble. A year after completing the Explorers program, I became a Class I Special Officer in Hackensack, and another year later, a Class II officer. I’m currently pursuing a full time position in another police department, and volunteering as an advisor in the JCPAL Explorer program. I always wanted to…

"If it wasn’t for the PAL program, it would never have opened my eyes to a career in law enforcement. I wouldn’t have gotten a glimpse into a day in the life of a police officer.  As of right now, I’m pursuing a career in law enforcement. Coming from the urban community, you don’t get a lot of interaction with police officers unless you are getting in trouble.  It was a really good program- I was able to connect with mentors and make friends that I still keep in touch…

Royaal
Posted on : 08-08-2016 By : admin
In a neighborhood where run-ins with the police are frequent, and never positive, the likelihood of Royaal dropping out of school, and going to prison was high. By the age of 18, most of his crew had gone to in jail. He joined JCPAL at age 7, playing football, wrestling, and eventually rugby. Sports kept him focused, disciplined, and out of trouble. At 14, he was able to get into a private high school to play rugby, graduating 4 years later with the “Athlete of the Year” award in 2016.…
